  • What Happened to Miraculous Manriquez Fuentes?
    Reported by: Ashley Alderman

    Friday, Feb 13, 2009 @05:12pm CST

AMARILLO -- What happened to three year old Miraculous Manriquez Fuentes?

One week after the toddler's death we spoke to the toddler's family.

They blame Family Protective Services, a nd it's something many of you are asking too.

How could the agency be involved for more than a decade, and a child still died?

Police say Miraculous died of acute abuse.

They say he had bruises on his body, and was malnourished and dehydrated.

Mother Diane Fuentes Aguilar's in jail for injury to a child.

So is her boyfriend Alan Alexander Adame.

Family Protective Services started responding to calls about this family back in 1997.

They say they've investigated nine times prior to this death.

Family Protective Services says they've done everything right from day one.

"Right now, based on what we've seen, we do not at this point see anywhere we acted inappropriately," says CPS spokesman Greg Cunningham.

In 2005, the kids were removed from the home.

Cunningham says it was because of physical abuse.

He says they worked with the mother for a year, and things seemed to get better.

He says when circumstances in the home were stable, and the mother completed all of the services the court asked her to do, the children were put back in the home.

CPS says they continued to work with the mother for the next year.

Cunningham says the situation then changed.

"There are different men in and out of this home over time," he says.

He says they investigated every time there was a complaint, which was nine times.

They only found proof three times.

"I think they should have monitored her more," says Donna Garcia, the children's maternal grandmother.

Cunningham says September was the last time a complaint came in, and CPS didn't find any signs of abuse.

One uncle says he called after that in December, but the agency didn't help.

    Cunningham disputes that.

Seven children were removed from the home after Miraculous' death.

A hearing yesterday left the kids in CPS custody.
