Reported by: Chris Martin Sunday, Feb 15, 2009 @09:14pm CST ROCHESTER, NY - Polluted rainwater runoff is an increasing problem worldwide. Landscapers Noreen Riordan and TJ Sorbera hope more people will pay attention to what washes down the drain. They install permeable pavement. It's a system of blocks separated by stones.
To show you the difference from your normal pavement we set up an experiment. When water was dumped on an ordinary driveway it carried dirt down the street. When the same amount of water was dumped on permeable pavement patio the water soaked right in. There are other small steps you can take to help cut down on runoff. Installing a rain garden is just one. A rain garden accepts water from your downspouts. For more on this green tip go to www.greenresourcecenter.org |
