Reported by: Chris Martin Friday, Feb 20, 2009 @09:00am CST DOTHAN, AL - Some people are doing more than just living green. They're taking the concept to the grave with an idea that can save big money.
Shirley Tice lives in Alabama but she's part of a growing nationwide trend. Shirley wants a green funeral. Shying away from traditional burials is a good environmental choice. And when Shirley visited her funeral director she discovered it would also save her thousands of dollars. Instead of a vault or a casket a green burial involves a bio-degradable container that is put in the ground. A marker pays tribute to the memory of the deceased. The price can be as low as $1200. That's compared to at least $6000 for a traditional funeral. Yet many of the services are the same, such as a graveside service, a specific place for friends and family to attend the service, a minister and music. Funeral Director Robert Byrd says he's amazed at the growing popularity of green funerals. People who even in death will help keep Mother Earth alive and well. Byrd says it's always best for families to talk about any final plans well in advance. |
