Reported by: Tammy Mutasa Sunday, Apr 19, 2009 @03:35pm CDT AMARILLO----For 31 years the Texas Gun and Knife Show has always drawn a big crowd.
But this year the show comes at a time when gun and ammunition sales have skyrocketed across the country, including here in Amarillo. Organizers say they've seen record turnout at the show. Rusty Cornelius is a vintage gun collector. Going to Gun Shows has been part of his tradition for 56 years. "I was born and raised into it," says Cornelius. Organizers say this year attendance is up by 30 percent. "They've been a tremendous increase everywhere, there's a lot of new people coming out, first timers, and people that have come out for years," says organizer Janice Hill. The last gun show fell in December, just after President Obama was elected into office. Nearly 4500 came to that gun show, up from the usual 3000. "There's been some concerns about our Second Amendment rights and there's people that have never been to a gun show and they're educating themselves on the difference between assault rifles and non assault, just for protection and the dos and don'ts," says Hill. Hill says ammunition sales are also going up. Across the country nearly four million background checks were requested in the first three months of this year, up 27 percent from last year. The gun show just came from Kerrville where organizers say they had a record turnout there as well. Organizers say right now the most popular sell, are handguns. |
