Friday, Aug 21, 2009 @10:17am CDT EDINBURG --- Firefighters from across the country are in Texas to help the drought-stricken state battle potentially devastating wildfires.
Texas Forest Service officials say 29 states have responded to Texas since early July, and many are stationed in south Texas. Two Alabama strike teams including a dozen firefighters and four bull dozers recently arrived in south Texas for a two-week assignment to help battle wildland fires that occur anywhere between San Antonio and Brownsville. The Alabama firefighters are joining a rotation of firefighting forces that will continue until Texas Forest Service officials determine that additional help is no longer needed. Wildfires across Texas have charred nearly 670-thousand acres so far this year. Much of south Texas is considered to be under exceptional drought conditions. (Copyright 2009 by Newsroom Solutions) |
