  • Three Wheeler

If you were going to drive the length of old Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles, what kind of vehicle would you take?

John Hargrove from Arcadia, Oklahoma thought long and hard about this. He lives just off of Route 66 and always dreamed of covering every mile. He's also a guy who likes to build things, and in the end decided to build his own car. Not just any car. A three wheeled car.

"I started on it a year ago last May", Hargrove said as he stood beside the frame of the still unfinished three wheel car.

It used to be a 2007 Chevy Malibu until somebody wrecked it. John took the engine and three of the wheels and transformed them into a new design.

"All the instrument panel, the heat and air, tilt, cruise control, power steering, power brakes, that's all Malibu", Hargrove said.

His place just east of Arcadia is filled with tools, other restoration projects and parts as well as memorabilia - pictures, signs, anything connected to Route 66.

His three wheel car ties together both loves.

He almost has the car ready to start. There are some wiring issues to work out and some tweaking of the steering of the rear wheel. But it's not like he hasn't built a three wheel car before. He has. And it's not like no one else ever has either. They have. Much of this car is hand fabricated. One of a kind.

"I'll have the only one like it, I can tell you that much for sure", Hargrove said behind a broad grin.

It kind of looks like an airplane, more broad in the front, narrowing gracefully toward the back. but John built it to fly on the ground. When he's finished, he'll close the shop for a while. Hargrove's plan is drive north, see some friends in Wisconsin and then start out in Chicago. He'll drive by his home and workshop, but keep right on going.

There are millions of people who go free wheeling on Route 66 all the time. John Hargrove hopes to join them soon. Three-wheelin', all the way from Chicago to California.

"Hopefully it will be a lot of fun. I'm gonna tour America in it."
