  • Walmart Green Test
    Reported by: Chris Martin

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Many companies have made the decision to become more environmentally-friendly.  The world's largest retailer is taking it to another level.

It's clear green has gone mainstream.  Walmart has been on board for several years.

Walmart Representative Matt Kistler says that the company is trying to fulfill three main goals: to be supplied completely by renewable energy, to create zero waste, and to sell products that promote sustainability.  Customers have responded well.  Sales for "Green Products" have increased in the last year.  Compact fluorescant light bulbs are among the most popular items.

Kinsler says that the savings on these bulbs comes out to $30 per year.

Walmart tracks green sales with its "Live Better" index.  It shows big numbers for C.F.L.'s.  Concentrated liquid laundry detergent and organic baby food are other big winners.  Now Walmart's looking to add even more green products.

Walmart is working to reduce plastic bag waste.  It hopes to cut the number by one third in the next five years.
