  • 12 Year Olds Having Sex
    Reported by: David Martinez

    Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @10:30pm CST

AMARILLO -- A recent University of Texas study shows that by age 12, twelve percent of middle school students have had sex. Sex isn't just a problem in high school, these days it's a problem in middle school. Area numbers mirror those figures and a local doctor says they're steadily climbing. Those numbers apply to the top twenty six counties in Texas. "The similarities that I see are that the rates are not going down. They're steady if not going up somewhat and the trends are that they're are higher numbers of Hispanic teens that are getting pregnant and that's consistent throughout Texas," says Dr. Teresa Baker of Texas Tech's Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. Daily, Dr. Baker deals with those high risk cases. Right now, she's providing medical services to at least a hundred pregnant girls between twelve and sixteen years old. "They're from Randall, they're from Potter, they're from Friona, they're from Hereford, they're from Dalhart, they're from everywhere, Dimmitt," says Dr. Baker. Over at Worth the Wait they agree. "That's why our program starts in the sixth grade, because we know that there are kids out there that are twelve, thirteen, and fourteen that are sexually active," says Amy Christie the Executive Director of Worth the Wait. Of the twelve percent, Baker believes twelve and thirteen year olds are taking high risks like having unprotected sex with several partners. "So there's a low percentage of them having sex very early but those that are choosing to take risks are taking big risks," says Dr. Baker. While programs like Worth the Wait target these groups a lot of their material comes from the kids themselves. "The kids are the ones that keep us in business. Which it's sad to say because we don't want it to be that way," says Christie. Unfortunately in most cases, both Christie and Baker agree kids are getting bad information which leads to pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. "Oh goodness, it's not just a heartbreak for the girls it's a heartbreak for their families," says Dr. Baker. A big reason why families have to get involved in the lives of their young children. In 2007, Dr. Baker says there were two hundred at risk pregnancies in the top twenty-six counties of Texas. One year later, it was up another fifty girls. That's just the cases Texas Tech dealt with. Some of the risks with those pregnancies include are pre-term birth, low-birth weight, anemia, high blood pressure and depression.
