Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @03:53pm CST (Killeen, TX) -- A shooting at Fort Hood in central Texas this afternoon has left seven dead and at least a dozen people wounded.
Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the U.S. and supports two full armored divisions, the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division. Fort Hood is also home of the Headquarters Command Third Corps and numerous other units and organizations. Construction on the base started in 1961, and the installation's Darnall Army Hospital opened in April 1965. The post's population increased, and Fort Hood is now the single largest continuing military effort. The overall post population is about 71-thousand, including 42-thousand soldiers. The rest are family members living on post, employees and volunteers. The post stretches 26 miles from east to west and 24 miles from north to south. Fort Hood is located about 60 miles northeast of Austin. (Copyright 2009 by VERTEXNews/Newsroom Solutions) |
