Reported by: Rachel Cox Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @08:38pm CST BUSHLAND---A gas pipeline exploded just West of Bushland High School Thursday morning. It happened incredibly close to homes where people were sleeping. People who live withing a 1/2 mile of the explosion were evacuated. El Paso, the company who owns the pipeline, Atmos, and the Sheriff's Department spent the day cleaning up and working on repairs. The pipeline was a non-toxic methane gas line. El Paso noticed a drop in pressure this morning and immediately shut down gas to that section of the line, but the flames still got as high as 700 ft. One house burned to the ground. Luckily that family made it out in time. Three people were treated for injuries, and one is still in the hospital in Lubbock. Police evacuated the entire housing development to the high school and middle school. Right now, El Paso is investigating what caused the explosion. As soon as their investigation is complete, they'll report to the federal government. El Paso's working with the injured people and will be working with the school to set up counseling sessions if some of the students need them. They may also hold a community meeting. They'll also be going door to door to survey damage.
