AMARILLO -- The 14th Annual World Championship Ranch Rodeo and Trade Show is back at the Amarillo Civic Center. "We got over 40,000 people coming through the Civic Center for this weekend alone," said Randy Whipple, President of the Working Ranch Cowboy Association (WRCA), the host organization. "It's the largest event that Amarillo sees in this building all year long." And this year, it's all about the ladies. "We've dedicated the entire week to the women of ranching," said Whipple. The Rodeo and Trade show's economic impact is huge. "We fill all the hotels, we fill the restaurants. "Teams come from California, from Arizona, all over the U.S. We've got teams competing here from Florida." "They drove right through the middle of the hurricane the other day," said Russ Treadwell, who won the World Championship at the Ranch Rodeo back in 2008 and 2005. "They say it wasn't too big of a deal." All of the rodeo's participants are working cowboys, and all the money raised goes towards a scholarship and crisis fund. "They might get hurt in the line of duty, roping and riding and getting kicked or something, and we're there to help that cowboy financially," said Whipple. Spur salesman Ben Walker, owner of Ben's Bits & Spurs, was working at the trade show and felt happy to help out. "Well, it feels like i'm part of the wheel." As for the events, which are the favorites? "I really like the saddle-bronc riding," said Walker. Arlene Aragon, who was visiting with her family from New Mexico, agreed. "I may be a little partial to the ranch saddle bronc riding cause that's what my son does." Whipple listed some of the highlights. "We start off the rodeo with our ranch bronc riding, which is the most exciting bronc riding you'll ever see. We've got wild cow milking, which is always a super crowd pleaser. Of course we've got branding and stray gathering." The rodeo and trade show is a rare event that the whole family can enjoy. "It's just that it's something down to earth," said Aragon. "Something you see the everyday cowboy do, and we enjoy it." And it's as welcoming for the participants as the spectators. "It's not very often that a ranch cowboy can come to town and feel, you know, like the red carpet here, so, we appreciate it a lot," added Treadwell. The 14th World Championship Ranch Rodeo wraps up Sunday at the Amarillo Civic Center downtown. The trade show starts at 11 a.m., and the rodeo starts at 2 p.m. The trade show is free, but the rodeo requires tickets ranging from $20-28. If the rodeo sells out, overflow seating will be available in the Heritage Room, complete with big screen TVs, plenty of seating, and plenty of food.
