Reported by: Adam Bennett Sunday, Nov 15, 2009 @09:27pm CST AMARILLO -- Winter weather is on the way, and TxDOT is ready.
"Our crews are basically standing by and waiting to be called out," said Paul Braun, TxDOT’s Spokesperson. "If they don't need to be called out, fine, but if we need to call 'em out, they'll be out there." National Weather Service (NWS) thinks Amarillo is in the clear. "Maybe we might see a flurry or so, but I'd say our best chance of any precipitation is gonna remain well north of here," said Christine Krause, a NWS forecaster. Up north, TxDOT has been pre-treating roadways throughout the day. "They pay most attention to the bridges, overpasses, ramps, and the heavily traveled roadways," said Braun. He added, "One of the areas that could ice over tonight is that big overpass south of Dalhart toward Channing area, (US Highway) 87, all the way to Dumas." But Texas weather is known for being unpredictable. "Our folks down here in Amarillo are ready in case the storm moves a little farther south." If and when the storm does hit, there are a few things the public can do to stay safe, no matter where they live. "Of course they have to slow down, you have to drive for the conditions," said Braun. "One thing many people do that is probably not a good idea is in icy conditions, 'Hey, I've got 4-wheel-drive and set that cruise control.' That's probably the worse thing you can do." And even if your car is in good shape, Braun says its always best to be prepared. "What we always recommend is that people carry a winter survival kit." Braun recommends a few items: gloves, a shovel, sand bags for traction, a coffee can and candle for staying warm, and finally, non-perishable food items and water. Braun also has tips for people who get stuck on the road. “Stay with your vehicle. Do not travel out. Your best protection is your vehicle.” People stranded on the roadside should also dial 911 for assistance. |
