"If you need a GED, now is the time to get it," Danette Fenstermaker, AC Community Link Instructor said.
That's because, as of June 1st, the price of the GED will increase from 80 dollars to 135 dollars.
And, the test format will change for the first time since 2002.
"Starting in 2014, they're going to a have a new version that is going to be more college and career ready, and it's going to also go from a pencil and paper test to a computerized version of the exam," Fenstermaker said.
The current all multiple choice exam will be done away with, and the new format will include a mix of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and extended response.
According to Fenstermaker, for many people, getting the degree is incresingly important.
"Most applications other than fast food and opportunities like that do require a high school diploma or GED, and we have people coming in every day saying exactly that. I need my GED because I'm in line for a job promotion, or I can get this job as soon as i have my GED," she said.
The Amarillo College Community Link program does offer a free placement test and a 40 dollar test voucher to people who complete the prep course.
