Buffs End Losing Skid in Dramatic Fashion

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M baseball team dropped the opening game of a twin bill on Saturday 7-2 against Cameron, but followed that game up with a 9-8 win at Conner Park. The win brings WT’s overall record to 8-30 and 5-24 in the Lone Star Conference, while leaving Cameron with a 25-14 record and 19-11 in conference play. Game #1 Recap - (Cameron 7, West Texas A&M 2) WT staked its claim to a one run lead in the bottom of the third as Darby Walker came across the plate following an error by Cameron’s third baseman Blake Watson. The lead would not last as the Aggies tied the game in the top of the fourth, and then took the lead with a three spot in the fifth. WT’s hitters were handcuffed all game as Cameron’s starting pitcher Brad Bichel who went nine innings and only allowing five hits. A bright spot for WT in the game was the plate presence of right fielder Greg Shanks who went 2-for-4 in the losing effort. Game #2 Recap – (West Texas A&M 9, Cameron 8) The Buffs jumped out early on the Aggies scoring two runs in the bottom of the first off of a Brian Schupp double that plated Darby Walker and Justin Graham. That lead would be short lived as Cameron scored eight runs over the next three innings, highlighted by a four run third. The Buffs would not lay down and roll over as the team put together a few hits to score runs in the third and fifth innings, pulling the Buffs to within one run. The final blow came late in the contest as Darby Walker stepped to the plate with teammate Kevin Els one first base and one out. Walker turned on the offering by Cameron’s third pitcher of the contest and sent the ball over the left field wall, for the walk-off home run. In the game Walker would finish 4-for-5, scoring two runs and knocking in four RBI’s for the triumphant Buffs. Picking up the win for WT was Eric Henderson, who pitched two scoreless innings not giving up a hit and striking out two of the Aggies batters.
