Portales -- In 2005, two senior citizens, Odis and Doris Newman, were brutally murdered in Portales. They were put into a car trunk and the car was set on fire. Now the community is working to make seniors safer.
A team from Lowes and the Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Office kicked off the Newman Project. The team is offering free home safety assessments to seniors. They will also install dead bolt locks, smoke alarms, motion detector lights, and provide seniors with a fire extinguisher.
