AMARILLO -- The Amarillo VA Health Care System will be hosting the Military Order of the Purple Heart Ceremony dedicating the longest segment of the Purple Heart Trail to date.
The dedication will link existing Purple Heart trails on I-40, from western Oklahoma to eastern New Mexico.
The Ceremony, organized by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, took place on the front lawn of the Amarillo VA facility. Mayor Harpole unveiled the highway marker to be placed on Interstate 40.
The Purple Heart is specifically a combat decoration and it is the oldest military medal in the U.S. It was first created by General George Washington in 1782 and was known as the Badge of Military Merit. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action.
