STATE COLLEGE, PA - Crews at Penn State took down the Joe Paterno statue outside of the stadium in State College on Sunday.

Workers covered the statue with a tarp, and brought in a forklift to remove the 900 pound statue.

According to the University, the statue will be stored in a secure location.

Paterno's family released a statement saying removal of the statue does not help the victims of the child sexual abuse scandal.

As crews took the large statue down, Penn state fans gathered to watch.

NCAA and Penn State sanctions will be announced Monday morning in Indianapolis.
