As you all know, Pharmacist Doug is actually a pharmacist, but he's a nutritionist, too. He likes it when we use the term integrative medicine when talking about what he does.  Pharmacist Doug, just got back from a national nutrition conference and will share a bit of what he learned.

The title of the conference was, Diabetes & Obesity-Innovations, Myths and Missed Opportunities. It is what you might call a "hot topic."

We, Americans, are making food and lifestyle choices that are gradually killing us. We are choosing to eat in a way that makes our bodies insulin resistant causing us to have blood sugar levels that resemble a roller coaster ride!

When you eat foods like sugar, sugary juices and simple carbohydrates your blood sugar shoots up fast and hard. Your body reacts by releasing insulin to bring it back down. When you do this to your body over and over and over and over again your body starts to get less and  less reactive. Eventually, your body gets de-sensitized to sugar coming in and blood levels of sugar stay higher than they should be. These high blood sugar levels trigger other systems in the body like increasing body fat, a change in the endocrine system, which regulates hormones and eventually affecting cholesterol. Also, your kidneys are drastically affected causing increased risks to cardiovascular disease. This vicious cycle goes on and on and on.

If I were to give my opinion the solution to the problem is eat less, eat more often and decrease simple carbohydrates/processed foods. You can investigate the difference between a complex and simple carbohydrate. It is all over the internet. You can write to me at mypharmacistdoug@gmail.com
