TxDOT Announces New Effort to Enhance Safety in Towns with Booming Oil and Energy Industry

AMARILLO -- TxDOT, DPS, oil and gas industry representatives and local officials are gathered today to announce a public education initiative urging motorists to drive cautiously in high-traffic oil and gas production areas.
Officials say the increase in oil and gas activity in the Granite Wash Shale has created new economic opportunities, it also has put more vehicles on the regions roadways. With more vehicles on the roadway it is creating new hazards for drivers who might not be used to the additional traffic.
Preliminary TxDOT crash reports for 2012 indicate the Granite Wash Shale area saw a 13 percent increase in roadway fatalities over the previous year.
