Amarillo lost both games on the weekend in Colorado, moving them to 2-10-3 on the season. It seemed to be the same story for the Gorillas as they played a strong period of hockey in the first, but were trailing 1-0 as Greg Pankewicz’s power-play goal was the lone tally of the first frame.
Amarillo continued to play strong in the second, but the Eagles opportunistic play allowed them to increase their lead to 3-0 in the period. Colorado would get goals from Seth Leonard at 5:53 and from Paul Esdale at 9:48. Amarillo out-shot Colorado 12-9 in the second period, but were in the familiar situation of having to come from behind in the third period.
The Gorillas would start strong in the period, cutting the Eagles lead to one goal after David Nimmo and Jason Chafe scored at 4:13 and 5:55 respectively. Amarillo would not get any closer however, as Leonard got his second goal of the night for Colorado off a nice feed from Riley Nelson to put the Eagles back on top 4-2.
Mike Lukajic’s goal at 13:33 would quash any Gorillas comeback, putting the defending league champions back on top 5-2 which would ultimately be the final score.
Amarillo has three games this weekend, facing Odessa on the road on Friday night, and then coming home for two more games with the Eagles on Saturday and Sunday night.
